The National Center on Dispute Resolution in Special Education

"Encouraging the use of mediation and other collaborative strategies to resolve disagreements about special
education and early intervention programs."

A Tale of Two Conversations

These two videos, which were developed by the Office for Dispute Resolution in Pennsylvania, feature Dixie Trinen and Suzanne McDougall. The first video shows an example of two people having a difficult conversation using poor communication skills. The second video shows how the same conversation can be conducted in a way that leads to significantly enhanced communication (both require Adobe Flash player, a free download). We recommend that you view the "Listening" video and "Understanding Positions & Interests" video in our "Working Together" suite of resources before viewing "A Tale of Two Conversations."

If you are interested in more in-depth study of the effective communication skills shown in the second video below, please check out our "A Tale of Two Conversations Study Guide."
