The current society that we live and educate in requires that we no longer approach training in an ethnocentric manner. This means that we need to examine the practice of training mediators in English and then expecting them to mediate in Spanish in their school and community centers. This training institute helped participants examine some of the myths of learning second languages as well as discussed the issues presented by monolingual ethnocentric training. We interactively explored techniques for translating the mediation concepts and vocabulary for Spanish speakers. There was also opportunity for analyzing the challenges this work presents for bilingual Spanish and monolingual Spanish and English speaking mediators and adult program coordinators.
