The Mediation Option

Mediation may be thought of as "assisted negotiation." The mediator, an impartial and mutually acceptable helper, assists parents and schools to reach agreement with regard to the education of a child.

We encourage you to review the Main Statutory Provision for Mediation Under IDEA '97 and the recently issued Main Regulation for Mediation Under IDEA '97.

CADRE also offers a variety of resources, including the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) Approved Training Module on Mediation Under the 1997 IDEA from NICHCY, the National Information Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities.

CADRE also here offers other valuable resource information about mediation. While this additional information is not formally approved by OSEP, our hope is that readers find value in these materials, which include a
sample mediation agreement
review of the benefits of mediation
sample mediation ground rules and
information on choosing a qualified mediator.
